Waterline has no account system and no servers of its own. Your water entries, profile and settings are stored on your device. We (the developer) can't see them and never receive them.

Health data moves only between your device and Apple Health. It is never used for advertising, never sold and never provided to any third party.

The App has no ads, does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), and includes no third-party analytics, tracking or crash-reporting SDKs.

1. Who this policy applies to

This policy applies to the Waterline iPhone app and Apple Watch app, as well as the widgets, Control Center controls, and Siri and Shortcuts features they provide (together, "the App").

In this policy, "we" means the developer of the App, as shown on the App Store product page. If you have any questions about this policy, you can contact us at jchenpx@gmail.com.

Please read this policy carefully before using the App. Sensitive personal information such as health data, and important points that affect your rights, are marked in bold.

2. What information we process, and why

1. Information you enter

  • Profile: nickname, avatar emoji, weight, height, age and activity level. Used only to calculate your recommended daily water goal and to display on the “Me” page. All fields are optional; weight has a default value.
  • Water entries: drink type, amount, time and where the entry was logged (iPhone, watch, widget, Siri, etc.). These are required for the App's core features.
  • Content you create: custom drinks, cup sizes, reminder hours, daily condition (such as feeling unwell or being outdoors), achievements and streak history, and settings such as appearance and units.

All of the above is stored only on your device (and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your own iCloud account; see item 5 below).

2. Apple Health data (requires your separate permission)

The App accesses Apple Health only after you approve each data type in the system prompt. Health data is sensitive personal information, and we use it only for the following purposes:

  • Writing: the water and caffeine you log, and your weight when you change it in the App, so you can see this data in Health and other apps.
  • Reading: weight and height, to calculate your recommended goal; active energy and workouts, to raise your goal automatically on workout days; and water and caffeine saved by other apps, to count toward your daily total.

Health data never leaves your device and Apple Health. It is not uploaded to our servers (we have none), is not used for advertising or marketing, and is never sold or provided to any third party. You can change or turn off any permission at any time in Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Waterline. The App's basic logging features will continue to work.

3. Location (optional, only when “Heat boost” is on)

When you turn on “Heat boost”, the App gets your approximate location (not your precise location) while you're using it and sends it to Apple's weather service (WeatherKit) to look up the day's high temperature, so it can automatically raise your water goal on hot days.

  • Your location is only obtained while you're using the App, never continuously in the background.
  • We don't store your location or use it for anything else. Apple's handling of weather requests is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
  • You can turn off “Heat boost” at any time, or turn off the App's location access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services.

4. Notifications

Water reminders and weekly report reminders are local notifications created on your device and never pass through any server. You can turn off reminders in the App, or turn off notification permission in system settings.

5. Syncing between devices and Apple services

  • Apple Watch, widgets and Control Center: data is passed between your own devices through Apple's device-to-device channel (WatchConnectivity) and an App Group shared container, without going through our servers.
  • iCloud sync (optional): when turned on, your entries are stored in the private database (CloudKit) of your personal iCloud account. We cannot access this data. Storage and processing of this data are governed by Apple's iCloud terms and Privacy Policy (in mainland China, iCloud is operated by Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co., Ltd.).
  • Siri and Shortcuts: voice requests you make to Siri are processed by Apple. The App only receives the result, such as “log this many milliliters of this drink”.

6. When you contact us

When you send an email through “Help & feedback”, we receive your email address, what you write, and the app version, OS version and device model automatically added to the end of the email to help with troubleshooting (you can see and delete these before sending). This information is used only to reply to you and fix problems. We delete it promptly once the issue is resolved, and keep it for no longer than 12 months.

7. Diagnostics Apple provides to developers

If you have turned on “Share with App Developers” in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, Apple provides us with the App's crash logs and anonymous usage statistics. This information is aggregated by Apple, does not include your water or health data, and cannot identify you personally. You can turn it off at any time in system settings.

8. What we don't do

  • We don't require you to register an account, and we don't collect phone numbers, email addresses (unless you email us) or identity information.
  • We don't show ads, read the advertising identifier (IDFA), or track you across apps.
  • We don't integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, push or crash-reporting SDKs.
  • We don't sell, rent or trade any of your information.

3. Where information is stored and for how long

  • Your data is stored in the App's private storage on your device and is encrypted by iOS Data Protection. When iCloud sync is on, a copy is stored in your iCloud account.
  • Your data is kept until you delete it. You can use “Delete all data” in “Me” › “Privacy & data” at any time. This deletes all entries on your device and in iCloud, and removes the data the App saved to Apple Health.
  • Deleting the App also deletes the data on your device. Data in iCloud can be deleted in Settings › Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Storage, and data saved to Health can be managed in the Health app.

4. Sharing, transfer and public disclosure

We don't share your information with any company, organization or individual, and we never transfer or publicly disclose it. Apple Health, iCloud, WeatherKit and Siri mentioned above are all Apple system services. They are used only after you turn on the relevant feature, and Apple handles the data under its own Privacy Policy.

Because your data is not in our hands, we cannot provide it even if requested by judicial or administrative authorities. Where laws and regulations provide otherwise, we will act in accordance with the law.

5. Your rights

You have the following rights over your personal information, and most of them can be exercised directly in the App:

  • Access and copy: view your full history in “Trends”; use “Export all data” in “Privacy & data” to export a CSV file.
  • Correct and complete: edit or delete any entry; change your personal information in “Profile”.
  • Delete: delete a single entry, or use “Delete all data” to delete everything at once.
  • Withdraw consent: turn off Health, location and notification permissions in system settings at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing carried out based on your consent before it was withdrawn.
  • Close your account: the App has no accounts. Simply delete the App and delete your data in iCloud and Health as described in Section 3 above.

If you can't exercise your rights in the ways above, or have any questions, comments or complaints about how we handle personal information, you can email jchenpx@gmail.com. We will reply within 15 business days.

6. How we protect your information

  • We don't run any servers, so your data is never collected in a central location, which fundamentally reduces the risk of leaks.
  • Data on your device is protected by the iOS sandbox and Data Protection encryption; Apple Health and iCloud data are protected by Apple's encryption.
  • If a security incident occurs that may affect you, we will promptly notify you through an in-app notice or other reasonable means, and explain the measures we have taken.

7. Protection of minors

The App is intended for general users. If you are a minor under the age of 14, please read this policy with a parent or other guardian, and use the App only with your guardian's consent. The App's water goals are based on general recommendations for adults. Minors should consult a guardian or doctor about their water needs.

8. Cross-border transfers

We do not provide your personal information outside the People's Republic of China. If you use Apple services such as iCloud, Siri or WeatherKit, where the related data is stored and how it is transferred are determined by Apple under its policies and applicable law.

9. Updates to this policy

We may update this policy due to feature changes or legal and regulatory requirements. The updated policy will be published in the App with its update date. If an update involves a material change to your rights (for example, new types of information collected or new uses), we will notify you prominently, such as with a pop-up, when you open the App.

10. Contact us

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about this policy, please email: jchenpx@gmail.com

We will reply within 15 business days.
